[Production] The shipowner gives us a thumbs-up—the ship "Cape Istanbul" has left the yard smoothly

On June 18th, I stood at the pier and watched the ship "Cape Istanbul" slowly left from the yard area. My nerves for nearly two months was finally relieved.

This ship is a Turkish bulk carrier (9 cargo holds), with a load of 175,000 tons, a length of 289.8 meters, a width of 45 meters, and a depth of 24.6 meters. It would be repaired in HRDD on April 13rd, 2020. The main projects are scrubber retrofitting and ballast water management system, 5 sets of mooring devices as well as some regular repairs for steel structures.

Dedicated to ship repairs is a habit that we ship repairers have already made. It is our work standard to repair every ship well. We will promptly organize workshop partners and construction teams to have pre-job tool box talks for safety, production and processing needs.

We fight no battle unprepared. The technicians are fully prepared and spent a lot of energy digesting the content and drawings of the project, sorting out every key point very clearly. The relevant management personnel have also given clear answers to the engineering, drawings, technical process and other issues raised by the construction teams. At the same time, I have also explained the overall production plan and main production areas of the ship, emphasizing the concept of no matter how busy the production is and safety is never forgotten.

The key project of the ship is scrubber retrofitting, which is composed of two sections FU01 & FU02 and scrubber equipment, with a total weight of about 100 tons. The scrubber tower is a closed structure, and the FU01 section sits partly on the platform of the old chimney layer and part of it is supported by pillars. However, scrubber retrofitting on this ship is different from the ones on other ship types: it is to open the smoke-exhaust pipe and fan hole on the side wall of the old chimney, and then the new tower room is moved up. Hence, whether there are hoisting operations or other constructions, it will add a lot of difficulties to the works of workshops and relevant departments.

The weather for over-weight cargo lifting is very important. Before hoisting the scrubber tower, I have paid attention to and followed the weather forecast every day, and asked the construction team to strictly implement the regulations on the operations for over-weight cargo lifting.

Although the process is tough and difficult, the hoisting of the new desulfurization tower module is finally successfully completed with the ship management team working together hardly. It is a solid foundation for the completion of the ship overall project. After witnessing the strength of our company, the shipowner gives us a sincere thumbs up.
